1.West Yorkshire Spinners, Illustrious (DK, 70% wool, 30% alpaca, 100g/225m)

2. A pair of 4mm needles
3. A 4mm circular needle, 40cm long
4. Stitch holders
5. Stich marker
TENSION
21 sts and 28 rows to measure 10x10cm (4x4in) over patt using 4mm needles
TEXTURED PONCHO
BACK
Cast on 120 (130: 140: 150) sts using 4mm needles.
MAIN PATTERN
Row 1 (WS) Knit.
Row 2 Knit.
Rows 3 and 4 *K1, P1; rep from * to end.
Last 4 rows form patt.
Cont working straight in patt throughout until back measures 61
(62.5: 63.5: 64.5)cm from cast-on edge, ending after a WS row.
SHAPE SHOULDERS
Cast off 5 (6: 7: 8) sts at beg of next 6 rows. [90 (94: 98: 102) sts]
SHAPE BACK NECK
Note Read ahead; neck and shoulder shaping are worked AT THE SAME TIME.
Next row (RS) Cast off 4 (5: 6: 7) sts, patt until there are 22 (23: 23:
24) sts on RH needle, turn and leave rem sts on holder.
Work each side of neck separately.
Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 4 rows and AT THE SAME TIME cast off 5 sts at beg of second row and foll alt row.
Cast off rem 8 (9: 9: 10) sts.
Slip centre 38 (38: 40: 40) sts onto a holder, rejoin yarn and patt to end.
Next row (WS) Cast off 4 (5: 6: 7) sts, patt to end.

Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 4 rows and AT THE SAME TIME cast off 5 sts at beg of second row and foll alt row.
Cast off rem 8 (9: 9: 10) sts.
FRONT
Work as for Back to beg of shoulder shaping ending after a WS row.
SHAPE SHOULDER AND FRONT NECK
Note Read ahead; neck and shoulder shaping are worked AT THE SAME TIME.
Cast off 5 (6: 7: 8) sts, patt until there are 40 (44: 47: 51) sts on
right hand needle and turn leaving rem sts on a holder.
Work each side of the neck separately.
Cast off 5 (6: 7: 8) at beg of 2nd row and foll alt row, then 4 (5: 6: 7)
at beg of foll alt row, then 5 sts at beg of 2 foll alt rows AND AT THE SAME TIME dec 1 st at neck edge of next 6 rows then on 2 foll alt rows.
Work 1 row.
Cast off rem 8 (9: 9: 10) sts.
With RS facing place centre 30 (30: 32: 32) sts onto a holder, rejoin yarn and pattern to end.
Next row (WS) Cast off 5 (6: 7: 8) sts, patt to last 2 sts, k2tog.
Dec 1 st at neck edge of next 5 rows then on 2 foll alt rows AND AT THE SAME TIME cast off 5 (6: 7: 8) at beg of second and foll alt rows, then 4 (5: 6: 7) at beg of foll alt row, then 5 sts at beg of 2 foll alt rows.
Work 1 row.
Cast off rem 8 (9: 9: 10) sts.
COLLAR
Join both shoulder seams.
With RS facing, using a 4mm circular needle pick up and knit 17 (18: 19: 20) sts down left side of front neck, knit across 30 (30: 32: 32) sts from holder, pick up and knit 17 (18: 19: 20) up right side of front
neck, 9 sts down RS of back neck, knit across 38 (38: 40: 40) sts on back holder, then pick up and knit 9 sts up left side of back neck and join to work in the round, taking care not to twist stitches. PM to mark beg of round. [120 (122: 128: 130) sts]
Next round *K1, P1; rep from * to end.
Last round forms 1×1 rib.
Cont in rib until collar meas 19cm from picked-up edge.
Cast off loosely.
ARMHOLE BORDER
With RS facing using 4mm needles, pick up and knit 255 (258: 261: 264) sts along the full length of one side of poncho.
Row 1 (WS) *K2, P1; rep from * to end.
Row 2 (RS) *K1, P2; rep from * to end.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 another 3 times and Row 1 once more.
Cast off.
Repeat for second armhole border.
MAKING UP
Join side seams up from cast-on edge for 27cm, leaving a wide opening for the armhole.
