KID’S OWL JUMPER-free knitting pattern

Welcome in the spring  with a knit they will adore! Jane Burns’ adorable owl jumper has plenty of party sparkle!

YOU WILL NEED
1. King Cole Glitz DK (97% acrylic, 3% polyester, 100g/290m)
2. A pair of 3.25mm needles
3. A pair of 4mm needles
4. Stitch markers
5. Stitch holder
6. Sewing needle and thread
7. 2 black buttons, 15mm diameter
8. Oddment of orange DK yarn for Beak

TENSION
22 sts and 30 rows to measure 10x10cm (4x4in) over st st using 4mm needles

OWL JUMPER
Note This sweater has a nice close-fitting neck, so be careful not to cast off too tightly. We highly recommend using Elizabeth Zimmerman’s sewn bind off 

BACK
Cast on 72 (76: 84: 88: 94) sts using 3.25mm needles and Yarn A.
Change to Yarn B.
Set-up row (WS) P to end.
Row 1 (RS) *K1, P1; rep from * to end.
Row 2 *P1, K1; rep from * to end.
Last 2 rows set moss st patt.
Work in moss st as set for another 5 (7: 9: 11: 11) rows, ending after a RS row.
Next row (WS) Purl.**
Change to 4mm needles and Yarn C.
Rows 1 to 6 Beg with a knit RS row, work 6 rows in st st in Yarn C, ending after a WS row.
Rows 7 to 8 Beg with a knit RS row, work 2 rows in st st in Yarn D, ending after a WS row.
Rows 1 to 8 set stripe pattern for Back.
Continue in st st and stripe sequence as set until Back measures 19.5 (22: 27: 29: 31.5)cm from cast-on edge, ending after a WS row.

 

 

SHAPE ARMHOLES
Note Keep stripe patt correct throughout.
Cast off 3 (4: 5: 6: 6) sts at beg of next 2 rows.
[66 (68: 74: 76: 82) sts] Continue to work in st st as set until piece measures 32 (36: 42: 46: 50)cm from cast-on edge, ending after a WS row, working final row as:
Next row (WS) P17 (17: 19: 18: 21), PM, P32 (34: 36: 40: 40), PM, P17 (17: 19: 18: 21).
Cast off keeping markers in place

FRONT
Work as Back to **. [72 (76: 84: 88: 94) sts] Change to 4mm needles and Yarn C.
Beg with a RS (knit) row, work 14 (16: 20: 24: 28) rows in st st, ending after a WS row.
Commence working from Chart, using the intarsia technique and joining in Yarn D where required.
Row 1 K19 (21: 25: 27: 30) work Row 1 from Chart, K18 (20: 24: 26: 29).
Row 2 P18 (20: 24: 26: 29) work Row 2 from Chart, P19 (21: 25: 27: 30).
Continue working in st st as set from Chart until Front measures 19.5 (22: 27: 29: 31.5)cm from cast-on edge, ending after a WS row.

SHAPE ARMHOLES
Note Keep Chart correct throughout for any rem Chart rows. When Chart is complete cont in st st and Yarn C only.

Next row (RS) K28 (28: 31: 31: 34) turn and, leave rem 38 (40: 43:
45: 48) sts on holder.
Next row Purl.
Cont on these 28 (28: 31: 31: 34) sts only shape neck as folls:
Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 5 (5: 6: 6: 6) rows.
[23 (23: 25: 25: 28) sts] Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 6 (6: 6: 7: 7) RS rows.
[17 (17: 19: 18: 21) sts].

Cont straight until piece measures 32 (36: 42: 46: 50)cm from
cast-on edge, ending after a WS row.
Cast off.

SHAPERIGHTFRONTNECK
With RS facing and working on rem 38 (40: 43: 45: 48) sts, slip first 10 (12: 12: 14: 14) sts onto stitch holder, rejoin Yarn C to rem 28 (28:
31: 31: 34) sts and knit to end.
Next row Purl.
Cont on these 28 (28: 31: 31: 34) sts only shape neck as folls: Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 5 (5: 6: 6: 6) rows.
[23 (23: 25: 25: 28) sts] Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 6 (6: 6: 7: 7) RS rows. [17 (17: 19: 18: 21) sts].
Cont straight until piece measures 32 (36: 42: 46: 50)cm from cast-on edge, ending after a RS row.
Cast off.

EYES(MAKE TWO)
Cast on 36 sts using 3.25mm needles and Yarn C.
Row 1 (RS) K to end.
Change to Yarn B.
Row 2 and all WS rows Purl.
Row 3 K2 (K3, k2tog) 6 times, K4. [30 sts] Row 5 K3 (K2, k2tog) 6 times, K3. [24 sts] Row 7 K2 (K1, k2tog) 6 times, K4. [18 sts] Row 8 (P2tog) 9 times. [9 sts] Row 9 (K2tog) 4 times, K1. [5 sts] Leave a long tail, thread through rem 5 sts and pull tight to gather.
Secure with sts. Using tail, sew side seam closed. Use a little steam
to gently pull the piece into a circle (do not iron flat).

BACK
Cast on 13 sts using 3.25mm needles and orange yarn.
Row 1 (RS) Sl1, knit to end.
Row 2 Sl1, purl to end.
Row 3 (RS dec) Sl1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, K1. [11 sts] Row 4 Sl1, purl to end.

Repeat last 2 rows until 5 sts rem, ending after a WS row.
Next row Sl1, ssk, k2tog. [3 sts] Next row P3tog. [1 st]

Cut yarn and pull through rem st.

WINGS(MAKE TWO)
Cast on 23 sts using 3.25mm needles and Yarn D.
Row 1 (RS) Sl1, (K1, P1) 11 times.
Row 2 Sl1, ssk, (P1, K1) 9 times, kfb, K1.
Row 3 Sl1, pfb, (K1, P1) 9 times, K1, p2tog tbl.
Row 4 Sl1, ssk, (P1, K1) 9 times, P1, kfb.
Row 5 Sl1, (K1, P1) 11 times.
Row 6 Sl1, ssk, (P1, K1) 9 times, kfb, K1.
Cast off.

EYEBROWS(MAKE TWO)
Cast on 23 sts using 3.25mm needles and Yarn D.
Row 1 Knit.
Cast off loosely.

SLEEVES(MAKE TWO)
Stripe pattern for Sleeves:
Rows 1 to 6 Beg with a knit (RS) row, work 6 rows in st st in Yarn A, ending after a WS row.
Rows 7 to 8 Beg with a knit (RS) row, work 2 rows in st st in Yarn B, ending after a WS row.
Rows 9 to 14 Beg with a knit (RS) row, work 6 rows in st st in Yarn D, ending after a WS row.
Rows 15 to 16 Beg with a knit (RS) row, work 2 rows in st st in Yarn B, ending after a WS row.
Work Rows 1 to 16 three times in total, then work Rows 1 to 8 once more. When stripes are complete cont in Yarn D only.
Cast on 40 (44: 48: 52: 56) sts using 3.25mm needles and Yarn A.

Change to Yarn B.
Set-up row (WS) P to end.
Row 1 *K1, P1; rep from * to end.
Row 2 *P1, K1; rep from * to end.
Work in moss st as set for another 5 (7: 9: 11: 11) rows, ending after a RS row.
Next row (WS) Purl.
Change to 4mm needles.
Begin working from Sleeve stripe pattern and AT THE SAME TIME shape Sleeves as follows.
Next row (RS inc) K1, M1, knit to last st, M1, K1. [2 sts inc’d]

AGES2-3,4-5,8-9AND10-11YRS ONLY
Work 5 rows straight.
Rep inc row. [2 sts inc’d] Rep last 6 rows another 0 (1: -: 2: 2) times. [44 (50: -: 60: 64) sts]

ALL SIZES
Work 7 rows straight.
Rep inc row. [2 sts inc’d] Rep last 8 rows another 5 (5: 7: 7: 8) times. [56 (62: 66: 76: 82) sts] Continue straight in st st until piece measures 31.5 (33.5: 37: 41:
45)cm from cast-on edge, ending after a WS row.
Cast off.

MAKING UP
Join right shoulder seam, joining Front shoulder sts to sts from side edge to marker on Back.

NECKBAND 
With RS facing, using 3.25mm needles and Yarn C, pick up and knit 23 (23: 24: 23: 23) sts evenly down left side of neck, knit across 10 (12: 12: 14: 14) sts on front neck st, pick up and knit 23 (23: 24: 23: 23) sts evenly up right side of neck, pick up and knit 32 (34: 36: 40: 40) from cast-off stitches at back of neck.
[88 (92: 96: 100: 100) sts] Change to Yarn B.
Set-up row (WS) Purl.
Row 1 *K1, P1; rep from * to end.
Row 2 *P1, K1; rep from * to end.
Work in moss st as set for another 3 (3: 3: 5: 7) rows, ending after a RS row.
Next row (WS) Purl.
Change to Yarn A.
Next row Knit.
Cast off using a stretchy cast off, such as Elizabeth Zimmermann’s
sewn cast off. (See note.)

FINISHING
Before sewing up Jumper, using the image as a guide, embellish Owl as folls: Sew on Beak, sew on Eyes slightly overlapping the beak. Sew on Eyebrows. Sew on buttons and Wings. Join left shoulder and neck band seams. Remove markers from Back top edge. Fold Sleeves in half lengthwise and place stitch marker, use
this stitch marker to line the centre of the Sleeve cap with the shoulder seam, pin Sleeve into place. Once happy, sew into position. Block gently to measurements, following any yarn care instructions on the ball band.
